THE 235 - Movement for the Stage II 3 cr. This course addresses more deeply some specific techniques of movement, composition, and improvisation used in the development of a professional dance and/or physical theater practice. We will review and continue to hone fundamentals of alignment and proper support through breath, Rudolf von Laban’s “eight efforts,” and dance fundamentals. Additionally, students will master a challenging modern floor‐barre routine as they build on these fundamentals. Musicality, phrasing, and composition will be introduced through solo and small ensemble projects as well as set choreography. Students will continue to develop their practice of improvisation and composition through explorations of vocalizing and utilizing props in conjunction with movement. An understanding of the meaning and context of contemporary dance and physical theater practices will be cultivated through assigned readings, discussions, and projects. The course will culminate in an informal showing of individual projects as well as a large ensemble work co‐created by students and instructor. This is an intermediate‐level course open to students who have completed THE 135 - Movement for the Stage 3 cr. or who, prior to registration, demonstrate to the instructor an appropriate level of proficiency in fundamentals covered in THE 135 .
