Program Description
In order to coach in a New York State Public School District, an individual is required to earn a Coaching Certification through the New York State Education Department. Opportunities exist to coach at the Varsity, Junior Varsity, Freshman, and Modified levels. Microcredential in coaching will provide students with the foundation needed to become a successful coach.
Coaching candidates are required to complete course work in the following identified classes;
PEC 297 Philosophies, Principals & Organization of Coaching
PEC 298 Health Science Applied to Coaching
PEC 299 Theory and Techniques of Coaching
PEC 199 Introduction to Exercise Science
Student Learning Outcomes
- Upon completetion of the Coaching Mircocredential, students will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
- an understanding of the social, moral and physical values inherent in secondary school athletics
- the basic philosophy and principles of athletics as inegral parts of physical education and the total educational program
- knowledge of the various regulations and rules governing athletics so that the decions a coach makes will not advserely affect the eligibilty of the students or penalize students unfairly
- knowledge of the structure and function of the human body
- a working understanding of how properly condition athletes and prevent injuries as well as recongize, evaluate and follow the proper cours of action when injuries do occur
