Program Description

The Police Basic Training certificate program is organized to include the learning objectives mandated by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) state‐approved police academy curriculum. These courses must be completed by full‐time study. Classes may be given during the days, evenings, or weekends.

Program Outcomes

At the completion of the Police Basic Training Certificate program, a student will be able to

Demonstrate working knowledge of New York State law including, penal law, family and juvenile law, mental hygiene law, vehicle and traffic law and criminal procedure law;
Apply various laws to established police procedure and public safety response techniques;
Demonstrate knowledge, actions and procedures required of police officers;
Qualify for law enforcement careers with appreciation and understanding of legal, physical and mental demands of the profession.

Employment Potential

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, “Employment of police and detectives is expected to increase by 6% between 2012 and 2022.”

Potential earnings in New York State average $78,930 at the 50 percent mark. These numbers increase if employment is found with state or federal entities.

Successful completion of these courses does not guarantee employment.

Requirements for Program Entry

No felony convictions evidenced by criminal history fingerprint verification
High school diploma or equivalent
Satisfactory medical exam
Compliance with established dress codes and supplies
Must meet physical standards established by Division of Criminal Justice Systems
Valid New York State driver’s license

Developmental Assistance

For students who do not meet basic reading and math requirements or who have other learning issues, extra assistance is readily available through SUNY Ulster’s Center for Academic Planning and Support (CAPS), the Patrik Math Center, the Literacy Lab, and peer and professional tutors.

Course Sequence

Police Basic Training students must maintain a C+ in all required PBT courses to be eligible for graduation. Students will be required to supply their own transportation to off-campus labs and learning sites. PBT courses must be completed in a designated sequence during one cohesive and approved cohort. Participation is required in all phases of the educational process.
