AST 201 - Stellar Astronomy 3 cr. Designed for the math and science major, this course provides a study of the structure, formation, and evolution of stars. The course covers the following topics: the celestial sphere, celestial mechanics, binary stars, the classification of stellar spectra, the interiors of stars, the sun, emission nebulae, protostars, red giants, planetary nebulae, novae, supernovae, white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes. 3 hrs. lect. Prerequisite: PHY 101 or PHY 109 and MAT 170 or higher. May be offered by request. Students who take this course will not be able to take AST 101 for credit.
